Vincent D'Onofrio hints at Kingpin's possible run for mayor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Maya Lopez's influence.
D'Onofrio believes Kingpin has not changed but rather has become enlightened through his experiences.
The post-credits scene in the Echo finale suggests that Kingpin might continue his villainous work while holding public office.
With Echo now released, Kingpin actor Vincent D'Onofrio has finally opened up about what’s coming for him and his character, Wilson Fisk, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Echo picked up Maya Lopez's story from her first appearance in Hawkeye. Apart from giving Maya a platform in the MCU, the Disney Plus series also gave fans a second chance to explore Kingpin's new journey in the MCU. The series concluded with a showdown between Maya and Kingpin in which the former forced the latter to confront his past trauma, prompting fans to wonder if Maya's actions will cause the villain to turn over a new leaf.
While speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, D'Onofrio opened up about the post-credits scene in the Echo finale. He also revealed what it means for his and his character’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the actor didn’t spoil anything, he carefully talked about whether his character changed after what happened in the Echo finale. “I want to do the right thing here and say something that is true, but not too revealing. I don’t think he’s changed; I think he’s enlightened. I haven’t seen a lot of the episodes of Echo.” On the other hand, the actor also disclosed what his character could do to become all-powerful.
So, in my mind, after everything goes down with Maya, he gets on a plane, and the news is playing on the plane. It says, 'New York is going to be looking for a new mayor soon,' and as he’s watching it, a light bulb goes on. So, by the end of that flight, he decides, 'If I want to be all powerful, this is what I’m going to do.' That’s the most I can tell you.
In the Echo finale, Maya Lopez uses her powers to help heal Fisk's difficult childhood memories, especially with his dad. His troubled relationship led to a brutal act. While the Disney Plus show doesn't delve deeply into the effects of this healing, a final scene hints at Kingpin thinking about entering public office, making fans wonder if he's changed for the better. But D'Onofrio's latest comments have made fans believe he might do his villainous work while remaining in the office. Kingpin will appear next in the Daredevil: Born Again TV show unless he appears in another MCU project sooner. The show is currently being revamped after a major creative overhaul in 2023. Though details are being kept under wraps, there's speculation that Daredevil: Born Again will adapt the Marvel Comics storyline Devil's Reign by Chip Zdarsky.
For the uninitiated, Devil's Reign primarily focuses on Fisk becoming the Mayor of New York City and causing problems for all the superheroes. In the storyline, Daredevil taunts Fisk during a conversation. Subsequently, Mayor Fisk outlaws vigilantism in the city. After that, he set up a unit called Thunderbolts, which captures heroes such as Moon Knight, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, and Danny Rand. It’s yet to be seen if Daredevil: Born Again draws inspiration from the Devil's Reign for Kingpin's story or if they choose a completely different path. Kingpin has a rich comic history, and there are many ways the franchise can explore his character, especially after Echo.
Echo is now streaming on Disney Plus.
Alaqua Cox returns as Maya Lopez in Echo, a first-of-its-kind Marvel Spotlight series. The show explores Maya’s past as she deals with the fallout of her confrontation with Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) in Hawkeye. Unlike previous Marvel projects, Echo is rated TV-MA and explores a grittier, more violent side of the MCU.
