But you'll only have one week to watch it.
Godzilla Minus One’s theatrical run is coming to an end soon, but if you’re looking to watch the best monster movie of 2023 before it’s too late and see it in a more classic monochromatic format, you’re in luck. A special black and white edition of Godzilla Minus One will stomp into US theaters–it was previously exclusive to Japanese theaters–but you’re going to want to be quick as it’ll only be available for a single week starting January 26.
According to the film’s director and writer, Takashi Yamazaki, this edition of Godzilla Minus One is more than just a quick palette swap. “Our colorist took the time and care to go through a very meticulous and complex process,” Yamazaki wrote in a press release. “The black and white images make Godzilla look very realistic and documentary-like, which leads to even more fear. Even though we have seen Godzilla Minus One many times, we felt that something completely different appeared here -and it’s very scary!”
The new edition of the film pays homage to the original Godzilla movie, which was a black and white release in 1954, and you can also check out a new poster for this release below.
Theatrically, Godzilla Minus One had an impressive box run and has so far made over $95 million worldwide. While that might seem small when compared to the billions made by films like Avengers: Endgame and Avatar 2: The Way of the Water, it’s still terrific for a movie made on a $15 million budget.
Godzilla fans can look forward to more kaiju action this year, as Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire will be released on 29 March. This time Godzilla will have to team up with Kong to face a new threat hidden deep within the planet, one that threatens their very existence.
