Description

Gimmick! was originally released on the NES in 1992 in Japan and Scandinavia. The game follows the story of a small green youkai named Yumetaro who’s mistaken as a toy and then given as a birthday present to a young girl. One night, the girl gets kidnapped by her other toys who are jealous of Yumetaro, and brings her to the land of Gimmick!

Your quest is to maneuver through a variety of levels and use your special star-shooting power to defeat enemies and save the day.

Gimmick! Special Edition includes brand new bonus features such as achievements, time attack mode, save, load, and rewind functions, a gallery mode, and more.

Switch-bendingly tough though it is, Gimmick is a salient example of what made the 8-bit era so wonderful: a razor-sharp, thoughtfully illustrated action adventure full of creativity and imagination. Just be warned that when people talk about ‘old-school difficulty’, Gimmick is a cut above what they usually have in mind, and to that end may prove frustrating for those unable to steel themselves to the challenge.80Nintendo Life

Gimmick Special Edition feels great to play, and makes a Sunsoft classic more accessible than ever before, but this release should’ve had better extras. For its asking price, this is an easy recommendation as long as you’re ok with the challenge.80The Mako Reactor
