Beneath the old kingdom lies the Embermaze — a shifting ritual labyrinth carved by ancient magic to test those who seek passage into the underworld. Entrants carry the Ember Torch, a relic whose light reveals hidden paths and weakens the spirits bound to the maze. You enter by choice, answering a call older than memory, and must gather the three fragments of the Ember Seal, unlock the ritual chest, and survive the ghosts of past challengers who now haunt the corridors. Each descent grows darker, and the spirits more numerous, as the Embermaze decides whether you are worthy to continue your descent.
Gameplay Overview
Embermaze: Descent is a first‑person survival‑horror maze game where you explore procedurally generated labyrinths, manage scarce magical resources, and evade deadly spirits as you descend deeper into an ancient underground trial.
Each run places you in a randomly generated maze lit only by your torch. Early levels contain some ambient light, wall‑mounted torches, and braziers, but these become increasingly rare as you descend. You can choose your starting maze size, and progress is tracked independently for each maze size and difficulty setting.
Your goal in every run is simple but dangerous:
Find three coloured keys hidden throughout the maze.
Use them to unlock the central chest and claim the final key to then...
Return to the elevator before the ghosts catch you.
You begin each descent with a limited number of spell shots — as do the ghosts. These shots can:
Cancel incoming ghost spells.
Temporarily banish ghosts.
Create brief moments of safety.
Recharge pads are rare, and ghosts can use them too, forcing careful decisions about when to fight, when to flee, and when to conserve your resources.
Progression & Difficulty
As you descend, the maze becomes:
Darker — less ambient light, fewer torches and braziers.
More dangerous — ghost numbers increase and patterns become less predictable.
More atmospheric — colour themes shift (dusty brown, sickly green, mystical purple, blood‑red) until darkness overtakes everything.
Difficulty modes adjust starting ghost numbers, lighting levels, and ghost behaviour, offering a scalable challenge for new players and horror veterans alike.
